Cole was born and raised in Montague County, Texas where he served as District Attorney and currently resides. He graduated from the University of North Texas, magna cum laude, in 1985 and earned his law degree with honors in 1988 from the University of Texas Law School in Austin. Cole has worked in criminal law in some form since receiving his license from the State Bar of Texas in 1988.

Cole's history includes:

• Two years as General Counsel for the Texas District and County Attorney’s Association in Austin following graduation from law school;
• Assistant General Counsel to former Texas Governor William Clements in 1990;
• Four terms as the elected District Attorney for the 97th District of Texas, which includes Montague, Clay, and Archer Counties;
• Over eight years as an Assistant District Attorney in the 271st District of Texas, which includes Wise and Jack Counties;
• Over a decade in private practice as a criminal defense attorney working in a large area of North Texas; and
• Six years as an Adjunct and Assistant Professor of Law at UNT-Dallas College of Law, teaching Criminal Law, Texas Criminal Procedure, and other classes related to the practice of criminal defense and prosecution.
